A code is a clue, not a diagnosis.
When the check-engine light comes on, the car's computer stores a trouble code. A code reader can pull that code, but the code only tells you which system noticed a problem, not what caused it. The same code can come from a loose gas cap, a failing sensor, a vacuum leak, or a worn part somewhere else.
We use modern diagnostic tools to read the codes and live data, then test to confirm the cause. That way you pay to fix the problem, not to try parts until the light goes off.
In Travis County, most gas vehicles still need a yearly emissions test, and a check-engine light that's on will usually fail it. If yours is on, get it sorted before your registration is due.
What the light is telling you
How the check-engine light behaves tells you how soon to act.
- Steady light
Something is out of range. It's usually OK to keep driving for now, but get it checked soon so a small problem stays small.
- Flashing light
Usually an active misfire. Slow down, avoid hard acceleration, and get it in quickly to protect the catalytic converter.
- On after you fueled up
Make sure the gas cap is tight and clicked. A loose cap can turn the light on, and it may take a few drives to go off.
Common questions

Can't I get the code read for free?
You can, and it's a reasonable first step. But the code points to a system, not to a specific failed part. Diagnosis is the testing that finds the actual cause.
Will clearing the code fix the problem?
No. Clearing the code turns the light off, but if the problem is still there, the light will come back.
Will my car pass the emissions test with the light on?
Usually not. Travis County still requires emissions testing for most gas vehicles, and an illuminated check-engine light typically means a fail. Fix the cause first, then test.
Do you diagnose electrical problems?
Yes. Electrical problems can be hard to track down, especially when they come and go. Tell us when it happens and what you notice, and we'll take it from there.
